Experience The Land of the Free

For people seeking sun, sand and plenty of adventure, Thailand is amongst the top places in the world to visit. The beautiful scenery of the coastal islands compliments the rich culture and mountainous regions to the north, not to mention Bangkok, one of South East Asias most intriguing cities. Theres a multitude of places to visit and things to do in Thailand, and whether youre a tourist or a backpacker, youre almost sure to never get bored by the countrys rich offerings. Indeed, you could choose to spend a week bronzing yourself on a beach in the south, or spend months exploring the highlands to the north and the borders with Laos and Cambodia. If youve got a trip to Thailand in store for this year, then take a read of this article to find out about some of the top destinations.

Ko Samui
This backpacker darling is Thailands third largest island, located in the Gulf of Thailand to the East of Surat Thani province. Until the late 20th century, the island was an isolated self sufficient community, but in 1971 two tourists arrived via a coconut boat and discovered paradise with white sand beaches, lined with palm trees sitting alongside clear turquoise seas. Its extremely popular with tourists and backpackers alike, with a reputation for being a hippyish place thats careful to remember all of the comforts from home. Its not the most off the beaten track place you could hope to visit if youre exploring Thailand, but if you love to hit the beach and party by night, or if you want to relax at one of the more luxurious resorts, then Ko Samui is a great place to visit.

Bangkok
The 8 million strong capital of Thailand is one of South East Asias most magnetic metropolises. Located at the centre of the country, Bangkok can serve as a transport hub to reach other parts, or as a superb place to visit in its own right. Its a city that can cater for every taste, with huge shopping malls and commercial centres sitting strangely close to the old villages of Siam, while the legendary nightlife is something that all travellers should indulge in. When youre here, make sure you visit Wat Phra Kaew Thailands most famous temple and an architectural wonder. While youre there, you should also sample the maze like Wat Pho. When evening falls, Chinatown is renowned as a great place to eat, while the Moon Bar at Vertigo will give you a superb panoramic view as you sip cocktails.

Chang Mai
Chang Mai and the surrounding province of the same name are located to the north of the country. The city is one rich with history and culture, having being founded in 1296 while boasting more than 300 Buddhist temples and being surrounded by picturesque mountains. The most famous temple in the city is Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, built in 1383 and offering superb views over the surrounding area. Chang Mai is also host of many Thai festivals. One of particular interest is Loi Kratong, which usually falls in November in the western calendar. Every year thousands of people float banana leaf containers onto the waterways of the city, while also launching sky lanterns into the air in a spectacular display.
